Palaspas (Domingo de Ramos) is
celebrated throughout the Philippines on Palm Sunday to commemorate the welcoming of Christ into the city of Jerusalem.
Palaspas are young palm fronds that are woven into intricate designs and often decorated with color papers flowers.
This delicate art of weaving palms comes from generations of practice within the family unit. The blessed palm fronds
are distributed and sometimes burned and used for medicinal purposes. It is believed that families with blessed palaspas
are protected from evil, natural disasters, or illness. Also, during this particular occasion, special food like the
Patopat or Suman is prepared ahead of time. The mixed flavors from the palm leaves, coconut, and sweet rice give diners
a delicious aroma and a creamy taste.

Workshop on Singkil Dance: a Filipino Dance
Epic
June 4, 2005 at 2:00 pm
Plainsboro Municipal Complex
41 Plainsboro Road Plainsboro, New Jersey (sponsored by: Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage commission and
the Folklife Program for New Jersey) This is perhaps one of the oldest Filipino dances, the Singkil recounts the Darangan, an epic legend of the Marano
people of Lanao del Sur in Mindanano. This epic, writtein the 14th century, tells the fateful story of Princess Gandingan,
who is caught in the middle of a forest during an earthquake caused by diwatas or forest fairies. In the dance, the
earthquake is represented by the clapping and criss-crossing of bamboo poles, which the dancers expertly weave and skip in
and out of. The dancers also manipulate large, colorful fans called apir, which represent the auspicious winds.
To this day the royal princesses of the Sulu Archipelago are required to learn this noble yet difficult dance.
